WW2 US diplomatic passport
Issued to the family of a Jewish consul in Shanghai.
Very interesting document issued before the US entry into the war.
United States State Department issued diplomatic passport which was then used, after obtaining the necessary diplomatic visas, to enter the Chinese sea-port city of Shanghai, a year before the country was engaged in full blown conflict in the Far East, the Pacific.
Diplomatic passport number 2506 was hand-signed by Secretary of State Cordell Hull, and issued at Washington on January 5th 1940 to Marjorie Mott Berger, and her 3 daughters, for the purpose of traveling to China and unite with their husband and father David C. Berger (1896-1975) who was posted to the US consulate at the time (in 1923 he was already the interpreter and vice consul to the city of Tianjin as well). We can assume that he and his family were evacuated out of the region in 1942, to be posted later on in Afghanistan (1944) and Argentina the following year, in 1946 he would return to China to the city of Nanjing.
