Superb Cold War US diplomatic passport

Issued to ambassador to Tokyo Douglas MacArthur 2nd.

Here is a fine early Cold War example that was issued on January 15th 1957.

United States diplomatic passport issued to their ambassador in post-war Japan Douglas MacArthur II (1909-1997). The document was issued and hand signed by US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who had a remarkable career as well, chiefly advocating strongly towards a more active and aggressive position to communism at the time of the early Cold War era. He was Secretary of State from 1953, and he remained in office until 1959 (he was diagnosed with cancer in late 1956, and the passport was issued shortly afterwards). He also was active in the completion of Japanese independence from post-war occupation and the Treaty of Peace with Japan from 1951.

Douglas MacArthur’s diplomatic career is as following:

  • Ambassador to Tokyo (1957-61);
  • Ambassador to Brussels (1961-65);
  • Ambassador to Vienna (1967-69);
  • Ambassador to Tehran (1969-72).

MacArthur was the cover story for the 1960 June 27th Time Magazine issue as well.
