Iceland honorary consuls’ passport

Issued in 1954 at Tel Aviv to Friedrich Naschitz.

The Israeli European relations have seen better and worse times. Not always sharing the same ideas or point of view, but this is natural among friends and even family. In the past the relations between the two countries, Israel & Iceland, were not at their best, but we can only hope that they will improve later on.

The passport in this article was issued to Friedrich Naschitz who was born on May 21st 1900 in Vienna and was lucky to avoid the war and the Holocaust. Travel document No. 69132 was issued on December 20th 1954 by the Ministry of Interior, Tel Aviv branch (According to a foreign ministry memo dating from October 13th 1952, only foreign ministry and government officials could make use of service passports, and even members of parliament (Knesset members) where not issued them, thus he was NOT issued a diplomatic or service passport here).

Fully used with many European visas, such as Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, UK and even West Germany: the British issued visa for Germany appears inside this passport (the UK was representing German interests in Israel up to the 1960’s, this was the case following the Holocaust and Israel’s objection to any full diplomatic relations with Bonn, though unofficial representation existed from 1948).

German-Israeli relations

A previous article of mine has a fine example of a pre-1965 Israeli Diplomatic passport used for service in Bonn.

I have added some images of this attractive early Israeli official passport.

Thank you for reading “Our Passports”.
