1919 interesting travel permit – Bombay

 

Issued to a Jewish family from Turkish Palestine.

 

The foreign relations of British India were handled in two main paths: The Political Department (was in charge of relations in the Asiatic sphere of influence) and the Foreign Department (dealing with European and other external foreign relations). The documents here, clearly dealing with Far East Asia, was amended to the Passport Office issuing body. The paper was issued in connection to the First World War and the special travel regulations that were enforced during the times of war.

 

The paper was issued specifically for travel to Java, and was issued to a family of young Jewish girls aged 7, 4, 2 and 3 months, originating from Turkish Ottoman Empire. The validity was for 6 months only.

 

With the visa to Singapore issued by the Dutch consulate, it comes with the Calcutta Police-boarding-ship certificate as well.

 

During times of war and the aftermath following cessation of hostilities, it is amazing to see the various types of travel papers that were issued.
