1852 French consular passport
First issue for use abroad.
The Second French Empire was an 18-year French regime that was established on 14th January 1852 and lasted to September 4th of 1870.
It was the imperial regime of Napoleon III and what makes this document an interesting historical item is the pre-printed year inside for 1852, something not that commonly seen in old passports where the whole date was hand filled in by hand. Being issued in May of that year and in London, in what would indicate to be one of the first consular issued examples especially made after the establishing of the Empire earlier that year.
The document was made out to a British officer named Colin Campbell who was going to France. Further research is needed to learn more about him.
In the meantime, I am sharing images of this antique.
Thank you for reading “Our Passports”.

These are great – I have a few including a short lived French Republic from 1848
